چکیده

South Africa is home to the largest number of people living with HIV in the world. The virus follows a distinct neuropathological and neuropsychological pattern, affecting specific neural structures and neurocognitive functions. One of the neurocognitive functions affected is verbal learning and memory. I explored clade C HIV-positive participants’ performance on component processes of a verbal learning and memory test, known as the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test—Revised (HVLT-R). While this test was designed for verbal learning and memory performance, it also taps into various aspects of executive functioning, that can either improve or inhibit performance. My study looked at whether poor performance on the HVLT-R was purely a memory deficit, or whether it was due to aspects of executive dyscontrol related to prefrontostratial circuitry damage. I used independent samples t-tests to look at group differences between 53 HIV-positive individuals, and 53 HIV-negative individuals.

Construct validity of Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised component process measures in an HIV-1 sample.

Executive dyscontrol of episodic verbal learning and memory secondary to prefrontostriatal circuit neuropathophysiology is a common feature of HIV-1 infection. Prior research indicates that standard clinical learning and recall indexes from Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) are among the most sensitive indicators of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders. Emerging data support the ...

Pattern of neuropsychological performance among HIV positive patients in Uganda

BACKGROUND Few studies have examined cognitive functioning of HIV positive patients in sub-Saharan Africa. It cannot be assumed that HIV positive patients in Africa exhibit the same declines as patients in high-resource settings, since there are differences that may influence cognitive functioning including nutrition, history of concomitant disease, and varying HIV strains, among other possibil...

The exploration of neuropsychological disorders in HAART - naïve young adults in South Africa

Previous studies have reported that Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) directly affects the nervous system and the brain, and subsequently, it compromises patients’ cognitive ability which in turn decreases their functional status and survival time. Using a variety of neuropsychological tests, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of HIV-1 on neurocognitive ability of HAA...

Racial distribution of Candida dubliniensis colonization among South Africans.

Candida dubliniensis is a yeast species that has only recently been differentiated from Candida albicans. C. dubliniensis colonization was initially associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive individuals. Because of the large proportion of AIDS patients in South Africa, we tested the generality of this association by assessing the prevalence of C. dubliniensis colonization amon...
